Thomas Matthews first came to Adelong when, as a Carter, he was 
contracted to bring a load of provisions to the Adelong goldfields, and
was so impressed with the area that he brought his family (including 
his father) to settle in the area. His first house was where Roches had
a property, which is now (1985) owned by Jacky Miller.
 
**March 26 1887 - ADELONG 23rd ... The other fire was at Mr. Thos 
Matthews. He lost a quantity of barley and some costly farming 
machinery, besides a large new shed in which they were stored. The 
origin of the fire is not known, but it is supposed to have been the 
work of an incendiary. 
 
**May 7 1887 - Adelong 3rd  
ALLEGED INCENDIARISM - On Wednesday evening, some person set fire to a
large stack of straw belonging to Mr. Thos. Matthews, who some six 
weeks back lost in the same way, a valuable stack of hay and a quantity
of grain and some farming implements, together with them.

June 7 1890 - A youth, 8 years old, named George Matthews, son of Mr 
Thomas Matthews of Adelong, shot himself dead yesterday. He was out 
with other lads shooting birds. The gun caught when Matthews was 
getting through a fence and the whole charge lodged in his neck. (The
