Although William was the son of Henry Walters, he was not baptised 
until he was eleven years old. By this time his mother had remarried 
and he was baptised with the family name of his stepfather, Smith. His
proper birth name is William Henry Walters.
 
William was resident in Tumbarumba NSW in 1888 (from baptism register 
entry for his daughter Esther Mary Ann Smith).
